Phat Phuc Noodle Bar - Chelsea

At a glance: Least pretentious meal in Chelsea, also coincidentally one of the greatest independent Noodle Shops in the city.

Visit for: Curative Laksa & Pho. Out of this world steamed custard buns.

Ordered: 2 x Beef Pho, 1 x Chicken Dumpling, 1 x Steamed Custard Buns, 2 x Diet Coke (£40)

Location: The Courtyard, 151 Sydney Street, Chelsea, SW3 6NT.

Every so often a particular restaurant can become about so much more than sustenance. Food (and the places we are fed) are associated with the unpredictable, sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit moments in life. And while you never know what life is going to throw at you, occasionally it’s incredible Vietnamese food. A tiny safe haven, tucked away in an unassuming courtyard. Phat Phuc, the hilarious antithesis to the yummy mummies of Chelsea.

This place is coveted and rightfully so. Curative Prawn Laksa and Pho, much needed on a grim and windy Thursday. I’ve learned my lesson not to frequent any time before 3 pm for fear of the queue that winds down the almost missable staircase into the tiny courtyard below. Home to one of the greatest independent Noodle shops I’ve encountered. Not to be that dickhead, but I remember a day when there was no queue and if the staff liked you enough you might be able to request an off-menu filter coffee. It's the equivalent of an elite black card at this establishment.

You order and pay upfront at the window and leave your name. Gather your chopsticks and find a seat within the tent. Even mid-winter this spot is always cozy and welcoming, heaters beaming out deliciously. Peak through to the kitchen and you’ll see four large pots of broth on the go, waiting to be adorned with prawn or tender beef. One of the many joys of this spot is that you’ll never wait more than 5 minutes for a fresh serving to arrive at your table from this tiny but mighty kitchen. Phat Phuc runs like clockwork despite its growing popularity.

Today’s order, beef pho with a side of chicken dumplings. The Pho is rich and salty, with perfectly tender beef and a hearty amount of rice noodles. Garnished with fresh coriander, Thai basil, and spring onion. The chicken dumplings are the stuff of dreams. Dropped in a fryer as you order, emerging crispy and scorching hot. Ready and waiting to be dunked in a side of sweet chili sauce. Feel free to slurp away. There is no judgment here. The patrons are friendly and low-key and generally here to get stuck in. If there is one thing you do before leaving, get yourself a set of steamed custard buns and call me later. You’re welcome.

Phuc around and find out.
